Merging multiple tanks - grouped tanks & cumulative storage

Connecting tanks physically or virtually

Updated over a month ago

You can connect or combine your tanks virtually (cumulative storage) or physically (grouped tanks). Both options influence when you and your customers are notified about the tanks' fill level, thus facilitating planning and delivery.

🧩 Grouped tanks: physically connected tanks

What is this?

Identical tanks that are connected to each other via pipes, for example, in order to simply increase the total storage capacity, are actually and physically connected to each other.

Example:

If you want to install FoxHardware on such tanks, this should be configured accordingly during setup so that your customers and you always see the correct fill levels, receive useful notifications, and can act accordingly (e.g., ordering, refueling, pickup, etc.).

How is this configured?

FoxMobile App: during FoxHardware setup

During setup with the FoxMobile app, you will be asked for the tank manufacturer and model in the in-app guide. Once you have entered this information in the app, you can specify how many connected tanks there are under “Number of connected tanks.” In this case, the fill level will be calculated automatically in the future:

If you are unable to specify the tank manufacturer and model, the tank can be configured manually afterwards. It is not possible to enter the number of interconnected tanks directly, but you can instead enter the total volume of all existing grouped tanks during setup in the “Tank volume” step—the effect is the same:

FoxPortal: after FoxHardware setup

  • Left panel => “Devices”

  • Search field at top left => enter hardware ID

  • Device details, top right => “Edit” (if you do not see this button, you may not have the appropriate user role - please contact your administrator):

  • If manufacturer is known:

    • Tab "Storage" => toggle "Select manufacturer"

    • Choose or check "Manufacturer" & "Model"

    • "Quantity of grouped tanks" => enter number of connected tanks:

How does this work?

  • This feature allows you to monitor multiple connected identical tanks with a single FoxHardware device.

  • This only works if all relevant tanks always have exactly the same fill level due to the physical connection. If this is not the case, we recommend monitoring each tank individually with its own FoxHardware device.

  • So when you and your customers receive a notification about the fill level, the fill level displayed there applies to all connected tanks.

🔗 Cumulative storage: virtually merged tanks

What is this?

Unlike tanks that are actually connected to each other, any number of separate and non-identical tanks can be virtually connected using the “Cumulative Storage” feature.

This is useful if, for example, one of your customers has several physically separate tanks monitored by a FoxHardware sensor, but only wants them to be filled/emptied when all tanks together have reached a certain fill level.

How is this configured?

Before you begin configuration, please first ensure that the “cumulative storage” feature is included in your package and activated - your account manager or our FoxInsights Partner Support Team will be happy to assist you with this.

Prerequisite: Cumulative tanks must have the same product and internal ID and be located on the same partner in FoxPortal.

FoxPortal: after FoxHardware setup

  • At “Devices,” search for the hardware ID of one of the FoxHardware devices that you want to combine virtually.

  • Device details => “Edit” (top right; if you do not see this button, you may not have the appropriate user role - please contact your administrator):

  • “Device data” tab => “Internal ID” field => Enter customer number & “Save” (bottom right):

  • Repeat this for all FoxHardware devices you want to combine, always entering the same internal ID.

How does this work?

  • In the future, you will see the “Cumulative storage” section in the detailed view of a virtually connected device. All connected devices are displayed below this section:

  • If you have activated the checkbox in FoxPortal under “Settings” => “Email & Notifications” => “I would like to receive a message only when all storage units within a group reach either the info or warning level.,” you will receive a notification as soon as each individual tank in a storage group has reached the defined info or warning level:
